This course can be used as part of the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians Refresher Course for all levels of EMTs. In conjunction with AMLS and EPC will comply with NREMT as a Refresher Course.

Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support - PHTLS


Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support - PHTLS is a classroom, PowerPoint, instructor-led course from the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians that teaches improved trauma treatments that promotes quality trauma management by all providers involved in the Pre-Hospital setting. This course improves trauma care and decreases mortality by using philosophy, stressing the treatment of the multi-system trauma patient as a unique entity with specific needs.


This course requires an approach to the trauma patient that varies from traditional treatment modalities. PHTLS promotes critical thinking as the foundation for providing quality care. It is based that, given a good fund of knowledge and key principles, EMS practitioners are capable of making reasoned decisions regarding patient care. This course keeps up with the advances in Advanced Trauma Life Support Guidelines.


AUDIENCE: This course is for all levels of practitioners including emergency medical technicians, paramedics, trauma nurses, emergency room nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistance, and physicians. This DOES NOT teach placement of advanced airways, rhythm identification, or ECG interpretation.


COURSE CONTENT: 

Correct identification of mechanism of injury

Relation of pathophysiology to injury

Emphasis on the assessment and management of a trauma patient

Management and ventilation of airway

Assessment and immobilization of a pediatric patient


COURSE FORMAT: This classroom-based which includes instructor, PowerPoint, video, and skill interaction throughout the course. This course is approximately 16 hours (two days) in length.
